A server control panel is the interface between an administrator and the operating system, turning complex console commands into web forms and buttons. The right panel saves dozens of hours of routine work. Let's compare the three main players: HestiaCP, cPanel, and ISPmanager.
HestiaCP: free and fast
HestiaCP is an open-source control panel for Linux servers (Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux). It's free even for commercial use, making it extremely attractive for agencies and emerging hosting providers.
What HestiaCP can do
Domain, subdomain, SSL management (Let's Encrypt automatically)
Nginx + Apache web servers, or Nginx as a reverse proxy
MySQL/MariaDB and PostgreSQL via phpMyAdmin/phpPgAdmin
Mail server: Exim + Dovecot + SpamAssassin + antivirus
BIND DNS server with zone support
Cron scheduler via UI
Backup to local disk, FTP, or Backblaze B2
Multi-user system with restriction packages
HestiaCP advantages
Price — completely free, open source, active GitHub community. Performance — minimalist, doesn't burden the server with unnecessary processes. Simplicity — the interface is clean and intuitive, setup takes 10–15 minutes. Security — regular updates, no closed-source components.
HestiaCP limitations
No built-in file manager (requires FTP or SSH). Technical support only through forum and GitHub. Some enterprise features are absent compared to paid competitors.
cPanel: the industry standard
cPanel is the world's most popular control panel. Almost every hosting provider offers cPanel, and most webmasters are familiar with its interface. But this popularity has a price — literally.
cPanel advantages
Largest ecosystem — plugins, integrations, documentation
WHM (Web Host Manager) for reseller administration
Powerful in-browser file manager
WordPress Toolkit — automation of WP installation, updates, backups
Familiar interface — most clients already know it
cPanel drawbacks
Price — after cPanel's 2019 licensing model change, costs jumped to $15–45/month per server depending on account count. A significant expense for smaller projects. Resources — cPanel is known for being "hungry": on a 2 GB RAM server it consumes 400–600 MB itself. Updates — not always stable, sometimes breaking configurations.
ISPmanager: functionality for the corporate market
ISPmanager is developed by the Russian company ISPsystem and is popular in post-Soviet countries. An important note for Ukrainian businesses: given the current geopolitical situation, using products from Russian companies carries reputational and potential security risks. We'll review it technically nonetheless.
ISPmanager features
Lite (single site), Business (multisite), Host (for hosting providers)
Built-in file manager and database manager
Automatic PHP and web server updates
Docker containers in higher versions
Price — from €3.3/month for Lite, from €9.5/month for Business

What to choose based on your needs
For small business and startups
HestiaCP is the optimal choice. Free, fast, functional enough. Money saved is better invested in content or marketing.
For agencies and hosting resellers
cPanel with WHM — if clients are already familiar with cPanel and willing to pay for convenience. HestiaCP — if you want to reduce operating costs and are ready to train clients on the new interface.
For e-commerce and high-load projects
Consider custom setup without a control panel — an experienced sysadmin will configure Nginx, PHP-FPM, and MariaDB optimally for your load, without extra panel processes.
Choosing a control panel is a years-long decision. Consult a team that works with different configurations daily and can recommend the optimal solution for your specific needs.
